Understanding hormone testing

Educational background on how hormone testing works — not medical advice.

What is a biomarker?

A biomarker is a measurable substance — like estradiol or cortisol — that a test panel includes. Different panels include different sets of biomarkers.

What does specimen type mean?

The specimen is the type of sample tested, such as blood, saliva, or urine. The collection method describes how that sample is obtained.

Why do panels differ?

Different laboratories and panels measure different combinations of hormones and metabolites, collected in different ways, so the included biomarkers can vary.

No laboratory is currently represented on HRTList as participating. Participating laboratories appear here only after explicit approval. HRTList is a marketplace and access platform, not a laboratory or clinician. Testing, ordering, and results remain the laboratory's domain, and clinical treatment decisions belong to licensed clinicians.
